For years, the idea of judicial accountability has been a sensitive subject in India. With growing concerns over corruption, the question of whether High Court judges fall under the jurisdiction of the Lokpal—the country’s top anti-corruption body—has reached the Supreme Court.
The case arose after a whistleblower petitioned the Lokpal, alleging financial misconduct against a sitting High Court judge. The Lokpal, however, hesitated, arguing that its powers were unclear when it came to members of the judiciary. The petitioner then took the matter to the Supreme Court, demanding a clear ruling on whether the anti-corruption watchdog could investigate allegations against High Court judges.
Legal experts are divided. Some argue that including judges under the Lokpal’s purview could prevent corruption, while others worry about the erosion of judicial independence. The Supreme Court’s decision could reshape accountability structures in the judiciary, setting a precedent for similar cases in the future.
If the court rules in favor of Lokpal oversight, it may pave the way for greater transparency. However, if it restricts the Lokpal’s authority, critics fear it could leave a blind spot in judicial accountability. Either way, the ruling is bound to have far-reaching implications.
