Medico Legal at Egypt

In Egypt, medico-legal services are provided through a combination of public institutions, accreditation bodies, and educational initiatives. Here's an overview of the key components:

🏥 Public Institutions

Authority of Forensic Medicine Established in 1916, the Authority of Forensic Medicine applies medical knowledge to establish facts in civil or criminal legal cases. Their responsibilities include investigating causes and times of suspicious deaths, sexual assaults, traffic accidents, and work-related incidents.

Public Service Centre for Forensic Medical Consultations and Analysis Founded in 2015 at Mansoura University, this centre offers forensic medical advisory services and toxicology analysis, It provides technical and legal support to doctors accused by judicial authorities, prepares forensic medical advisory reports in various legal cases, and conducts toxicological analyses of biological samples.

🧪 Accreditation Bodies

Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) EGAC is the accreditation body responsible for assessing the competence of forensic service providers in Egypt. It offers accreditation for forensic testing and inspection services according to international standards such as ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 1702. Accredited services include crime laboratories, environmental testing laboratories, law enforcement agencies, and forensic medical examiner service.

🎓 Educational Initiatives

*Handling of Medico-Legal Cases in Governmental Hospitals

A study conducted in Cairo assessed physicians' knowledge, practices, and attitudes regarding the handling of medico-legal cases (MLCs) in governmental hospitals. The study revealed that while many physicians had a positive attitude towards handling MLCs, only half possessed fair knowledge, and 80% exhibited poor practice in managing such cases. The study highlighted the need for integrating forensic education at the postgraduate level to improve the handling, documentation, and reporting of MLs.

These institutions and initiatives collectively enhance the medico-legal landscape in Egypt, ensuring that both medical and legal professionals have access to necessary resources and support.
