General Practice Law at Jordan

In Jordan, the legal profession is regulated by the Jordanian Bar Association (JBA) under the Bar Association Law. To practice as a lawyer in Jordan, individuals must meet specific educational, training, and ethical requirements.

🧑‍⚖️ Path to Becoming a Lawyer in Jordan

1. Educational Requirements

Law Degree:Obtain a law degree from a recognized university or law institute. The degree must be acceptable for practicing the legal profession in the country that granted it

2. Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

Citizenship:Have held Jordanian citizenship for at least ten years

Age:Be at least 23 years old

Residency:Be a permanent resident f Jordan

Character:Have good conduct and reputation, with no convictions for moral crimes or disciplinary actions affecting honor and dignity

3. Training Period

Duration Complete a mandatory training period under the supervision of a licensed attorney

Two years for holders of a bachelor's degree in law

One year for those with a postgraduate degree in law (e.g., master's or doctorate)

Exemptions:certain individuals, such as former judges or prosecutors with at least two years of service, may be exempted from the training requirement

4. Examinations and Research

Written Exam:After completing the training period, candidates must pass a written examination administered by the JBA

Oral Exam:Successful candidates proceed to an oral examination conducted by a committee of judges, professors, and senior lawyers

Research Paper:Candidates are required to submit a research paper on a legal subject and discuss their findings before the committee

5. Oath and Registration

Oath:Upon passing all examinations and evaluations, candidates must take an oath before the Minister of Justice

Registration:After taking the oath, individuals are officially registered as practicing lawyers in Jordan

Licensed lawyers in Jordan are authorized to

Represent clients in all courts, except for Sharia courts

Provide legal advice and consultancy services

Draft and organize contracts and legal documents

Represent clients before administrative agencies and public or private institutions
