📜 Article 257 of the Constitution of IndiaControl of the Union over States in Certain Cases

Text of Article 257:

(1) The executive power of every State shall be so exercised as not to impede or prejudice the exercise of the executive power of the Union, and the Union shall have power to give such directions to a State as may appear to the Government of India to be necessary for that purpose.

(2) The executive power of the Union shall also extend to the giving of directions to a State as to the construction and maintenance of means of communication declared in the direction to be of national or military importance.

(3) The Government of India may, if it deems necessary, provide for the carrying out of such direction and for the payment by the Government of India of the cost incurred in doing so.

(4) Where in carrying out any direction given under clause (2) as to the construction or maintenance of any means of communication or the protection of any railway, the Government of India incurs any cost, that cost shall be paid by the State in accordance with such principles as may be laid down by, and directions given by, the Government of India, and in case of any dispute, the decision of the Government of India shall be final.
